“Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories.” – Laurie Anderson, Musician
Just over a month ago, MarketplaceLIVE took place and it’s still hard to believe it’s over. After all the hard work and preparation leading up to the big day, it’s amazing how quickly the jam-packed day, which was filled with keynotes, virtual reality, breakout sessions, training, a hackathon, data center tours and networking, flew by. In case you missed anything, here is our rundown of the top 10 highlights from that day:
10. Talks and workshops that make you say “Hmm…”
This year, we had an all-star group of MarketplaceLIVE speakers who were successfully able to light the figurative light bulbs above our heads and spark inspiration. From CEOs of leading tech companies to trusted experts in their field, we laughed, we learned, and we were left slightly more fulfilled than before the day begun. This year’s content challenged us to think outside the box on what’s next for the future of technology. We learned that college and high school dropouts can indeed be successful as long as determination, hard work, and a good attitude are practiced. We heard lawyers debate the environmental, societal, moral and legal implications that come with driverless cars becoming a reality. We connected the dots between how running and tech intersect with the huge amount of data that is collected during the world’s largest marathon. IT strategies will get shorter, not longer, this means we will need to keep up with a continually evolving marketing.
9. Partnering with Associations near & far
Digital Realty is proud to partner with a number of associations throughout the year and this year’s MarketplaceLIVE was an opportunity to shine a spotlight on them and the great work they’re doing. We believe in partnering with local communities for the opportunity to cross-pollinate ideas so a big thank you goes out to our partners that helped make MarketplaceLIVE a reality. You can learn more about these associations here: PTC, Business Chicks, NYNOG, New York Venture Community, NJTC, Wearhacks, Telegeography, Carrier Community, NY Tech Alliance, The New York Code + Design Academy, Strategy Hack,
8. Views all Day!
This year for the first time, we were able to call Spring Studios the home of MarketplaceLIVE. And what a beautiful home it was. With 17-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows that flooded in natural light, a rooftop overlooking the Hudson River and breathtaking views of lower Manhattan, Spring Studios was the perfect canvas for a day of learning, networking, and lots and lots of pictures.
7. Sponsors, Partners, Vendors & Friends!
MarketplaceLIVE simply could not exist without our deeply appreciated sponsors, partners, and vendors. A big shout-out goes out to Alibaba as this year’s Gold Sponsor.
You can view the full list of sponsors here.
6. Touching the Internet
Attendees were able to not only learn about the history of connectivity but they were able to experience it by “touching the internet” via virtual reality. Our VR experience guides the viewer through the story behind connectivity and provides an inside look at behind-the-scenes footage that includes: how fiber optic cable is made, a data center meet-me-room, and breathtaking shots of the internet-powered world around us.
5. Women In Tech
In a heavily male-dominated tech industry, we were stoked to feature female inventor, Simone Giertz, at this year’s event. Simone is a leader in a whole new generation of makers and DIY-ers . She gave an inspiring and engaging talk on how she became “the queen of sh**tty robots” and shared with us some tips that helped her along the way, such as "enthusiasm is a much better fuel than duty" and "being bad at things can teach you humility”. Her passion, curiosity and comedic relief left us enamored and inspired by her. We highly recommend following Simone on YouTube. Can’t wait to see what inventions she comes up with next!
4. Networking Everywhere!
With 1,200+ attendees, networking opportunities were abound. Our attendees are truly what make MarketplaceLIVE so special every year, and when we can get everyone in one room to meet and exchange ideas, that’s when the real MPL magic begins. A networking highlight took place on the Exhibitor show floor amongst our 50+ exhibitors where Emma Isaacs, CEO of Business Chicks, led us in a session aimed at breaking down the barriers associated with networking, while brushing up on our skills with some great icebreaker tips: "always try to be altruistic in your networking" and “try not to always ask others ‘what do you do?’ and instead try asking questions like what are they passionate about?” The session finished with a cocktail reception overlooking the Hudson and, yes, more networking!
3. Jonah Peretti Keynote
This year we had the honor of welcoming to the stage Buzzfeed CEO, Jonah Peretti, to deliver our morning keynote about creating, and more importantly, connecting content. Jonah delivered a powerful - and at times hilarious - presentation on why Buzzfeed is able to do what it does best: create and deliver content that is emotionally evocative. A perfect, hysterical example of this is the “Weird Things All Couples Fight About” video that Jonah showed us. “If you understand your audience and their relationships on an emotional level, you can do amazing things through content.” Preach, Jonah.
2. Introducing Service Exchange
Digital Realty announced the release of Service Exchange, an interconnection platform that enables seamless, on-demand, direct access to multiple clouds and networks. Service Exchange is powered by Megaport, the leading provider of elastic interconnection, and is set to launch this November. You can find the full press release here.
1. Inspiration Overload
The spirit of the day was to inspire all attendees by the unexpected. We started this MarketplaceLIVE with a promise of: tons of new contacts, inspiring talks & workshops, inspiration overload and actionable ideas to take back to the office.
