Cloud Survey Shows a More Mature Cloud Market and Growing Hybrid Adoption

Hybrid cloud adoption is up, more enterprise workloads are shifting to cloud, and in general, the cloud ecosystem is more mature than it's ever been.

Those are just a few of the conclusions of RightScale’s 2016 State of the Cloud Survey, for which RightScale surveyed 1,060 technical professionals across a broad cross-section of organizations. We covered this annual cloud survey on our blog last year, and the survey continues to be an important indicator of the overall health of the cloud market.

What’s changed since this time last year? Here are a few key highlights:

  • Hybrid cloud adoption grew significantly. Private cloud adoption grew from 63% to 77%, and consequently, hybrid cloud adoption rose from 58% to 71% year-over-year. At the time of the survey, 95% of organizations were running applications or experimenting with IaaS.
  • More workloads are shifting to cloud. 17% of enterprises now have more than 1,000 VMs in public cloud, up from 13% last year; 31% of enterprises now have more than 1,000 VMs in private cloud, up from 22% last year. What's more, cloud users leverage six clouds on average.
  • The ecosystem is more mature than ever. Security is no longer the top cloud challenge, which is a positive sign in terms of the maturity of the cloud market. Instead, lack of resources/expertise is now the number one cloud challenge (cited by 32%). The lack of resources/expertise is certainly a concern, but growing adoption across the board shows that organizations are still finding effective ways to implement substantive cloud strategies.
  • Private cloud adoption is growing. Finally, private cloud providers are continuing to grow, signaling positive signs for the industry. VMware vSphere, Openstack, and VMware vCloud Suite all showed strong year-over-year growth.

All told, RightScale's 2016 State of the Cloud report reinforces the message we introduced last year: cloud computing continues to grow, but still has substantial room for growth in many industries. That said, cloud users and providers are both more mature than they've ever been. Moving forward, it seems the biggest challenge will be continuing to hone and retain expertise within the enterprise.

At Telx, we continue to enable not only hybrid cloud, but also simple interconnection. Knowing that more users are relying on hybrid deployments, we have continued to offer robust private cloud solutions through the Telx Cloud Xchange. What's more, we're offsetting concerns about a lack of expertise by simplifying interconnection at all our data centers. We’re pleased to see the trends identified by RightScale here, and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the year ahead.
